The power of diversity in the workplace: why it matters at Llamau

At Llamau, diversity isn’t just an aspiration—it’s essential to who we are. We know that real change happens when people feel seen, heard, and valued. To provide the best possible support, our colleagues should reflect the communities we serve. That’s why we’re committed to building an inclusive organisation where lived experience, understanding, and empathy shape everything we do.

Why does diversity matter?

A diverse team brings together different backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. This leads to better problem-solving, more creativity, and stronger decision-making. When people feel valued for who they are, they’re more engaged, motivated, and able to do their best work.

At Llamau, we’re building a culture where everyone belongs—because when our colleagues thrive, they can provide the best possible support, empowering people to move on from homelessness into stable, secure futures.

The impact of a diverse workforce

  • Better problem-solving and innovation
Research shows that diverse teams make stronger decisions and drive better outcomes. Different perspectives lead to new ideas and better solutions.

  • A culture of learning and growth
We embrace different lived experiences and encourage conversations about identity, inclusion, and equity, ensuring we continue to grow as an organisation.

  • Stronger connections with the people Llamau support
Many of our colleagues have had similar experiences to the young people and women we support. This helps builds trust, understanding, and more meaningful support.

  • Attracting and retaining the best people
When people feel respected and included, they stay. By championing diversity, we’re strengthening our workforce and making Llamau a place where everyone can thrive.

How we’re championing diversity at Llamau

We’re taking action to create and maintain an inclusive and supportive workplace. Some of the steps we’re taking include:

Colleague networks

We have a growing number of colleague networks including LGBTQ+, menopause, and neurodiversity colleague groups to provide peer support and drive positive change.

Training for fair and inclusive leadership

Managers receive training on Equality and Diversity and unconscious bias, helping to ensure fair decision-making across the organisation.

Compassionate leadership

Colleagues have access to compassionate leadership training, fostering a supportive and empathetic workplace culture.

Commitment to anti-racism

Our Directors and Board have completed anti-racism training, embedding accountability at senior level.

Disability inclusion

We’ve achieved Disability Confident Level 3, demonstrating our commitment to accessible employment.

Supporting LGBTQ+ inclusion

We’ve earned a Bronze Award in the Stonewall Top Employers Index, recognising our commitment to creating a workplace where LGBTQ+ colleagues feel valued and supported.

Celebrating cultural identity

We’ve signed up to the Halo Code, supporting black employees right to wear their hair naturally in the workplace.

Prioritising mental health

We’ve committed to Time to Change Wales, reinforcing our dedication to mental health awareness and support.

Embedding inclusivity into our practices

We’re seeking Cultural Competence recognition with Diverse Cymru to ensure we continue learning and improving.

Looking ahead

Diversity isn’t a box to tick—it’s how we create lasting change. As we continue our work to help end homelessness for young people and women in Wales, we’ll keep listening, learning, and ensuring that everyone at Llamau—and everyone we support—feels truly valued.

By fostering an inclusive workplace, we strengthen our organisation, improve our support, and build a future where no young person or woman has to face homelessness alone. Because at Llamau, diversity isn’t just something we talk about—it’s who we are.
